In June, we are placing extra focus on entrepreneurship. We’re halfway through 2022, a year that has certainly not been without its challenges. How do entrepreneurs handle this? And how can we make it easier to be an entrepreneur in Denmark?
We’re taking a look at the state of Danish entrepreneurship. Earlier this month, we shared a list of female entrepreneurs we think you should know, and in the spirit of equality, we’d like to honor the male entrepreneurs who are just as brave.
Check out our list of male entrepreneurs with momentum down below.
How Are Danish Entrepreneurs Holding Up?
In brief – things are actually going well. Danish entrepreneurs are tough, and a pandemic isn’t enough to bring them down. Looking at 2021, a total of 32,949 new businesses were founded in Denmark, despite the obstacles posed by the pandemic. That’s 3,212 more businesses than in 2020, an 11% increase. Want to see how your region contributed? You can find the details here.
It’s crucial that we continue the positive growth in Denmark. New businesses have a much greater impact on employment than previously thought. Startups create more jobs, new jobs that didn’t exist before, and they also seem to offer better salaries to their employees. In addition, they contribute innovative ideas that drive development forward.
"It creates jobs and growth that ultimately lead to a societal return on the bottom line."
What Does the Future Hold for Danish Entrepreneurs?
There has been a slight slowdown in investment activity at the start of 2022 compared to 2021. However, it remains at a very high level when compared to previous years. Denmark is following the global market trend with a slight dip in investments, while the rest of Europe, especially the UK and France, continue to maintain the high investment levels of 2021. Fintech companies still attract the most capital in the business sector.
Despite the challenges facing Danish businesses—such as the pandemic, inflation, and whatever the future may hold—it turns out that Danish companies are experts in digital growth. When the status quo is challenged, it generally forces society to make changes. This became clear during the COVID-19 pandemic.
For years, we had been talking about the digital shift, and the pandemic forced us to make it happen. In fact, we’re now leading Europe in digital commerce.
Denmark has successfully become a fully digitized country with a diverse e-commerce market and a harmonious e-commerce environment.

How Can We Continue the Positive Progress?
We can support Danish entrepreneurs.
As mentioned earlier, entrepreneurs contribute to competitiveness, growth, and prosperity in Denmark. They account for about half of all new jobs, with high productivity and innovative development. Their positive impact on Danish society is felt in many ways. We must do everything we can to promote this!
Therefore, it can be made easier to be an entrepreneur in Denmark. There are many ways to achieve this. Entrepreneurship can be made more accessible in our educational systems, with a greater focus on role models, and it can be made more attractive to take the leap into entrepreneurship by adjusting economic incentives. Additionally, it can be easier for entrepreneurs to acquire skills, such as access to export support, further education, and courses. It could also improve for entrepreneurs if parental leave and tax policies are better. SMVdanmark has many great suggestions on how to make entrepreneurship more attractive.
Being an entrepreneur isn’t necessarily easy, which is why we want to celebrate those who take the leap anyway and follow their passion. Earlier, we created a list of Female Entrepreneurs You Should Know, and in the spirit of equality, we’d like to honor the male entrepreneurs who are just as brave:
