MamaMilla: From Maternity Idea to a Successful Family-Run Business

Interview: MamaMilla

From a simple idea in 2014 to a successful family-run business, Kamilla Vinding and Bruno Poulsen have taken the baby world by storm. MamaMilla combines passion and quality, and we take a closer look at their journey and their collaboration with pensopay.

It was the baby nest—a small, portable baby bed—that kick-started MamaMilla’s journey. Since then, the family has grown with three children and a team of talented employees. MamaMilla is often referred to as the family’s fourth and perhaps most expensive child—at least for now.

We had the pleasure of visiting Kamilla Vinding and Bruno Poulsen in their showroom, where we talked about life as entrepreneurs and got a chance to see their adorable selection of baby clothes and toys. You can also check out our visit to MamaMilla here

Who is MamaMilla

Kamilla describes herself as "the creative genius" behind MamaMilla. She came up with the idea for the company and is responsible for product development, purchasing, and all marketing efforts. Bruno, on the other hand, manages the technical side and handles IT operations.

For a couple who had just emerged from the baby bubble with their third child, they were surprisingly calm during our visit—a testament to their impressive balance. After a tour of the showroom and warehouse, Kamilla and Bruno settled into their light green sofa and passionately shared their journey with MamaMilla. Being entrepreneurs while raising children is possible—Kamilla and Bruno certainly make it look effortless.

How did MamaMilla come to be?

MamaMilla was born during Kamilla’s first maternity leave. She sewed her own baby nest, which quickly caught the interest of friends and family. Soon, more people started asking about the product, and before long, there were those who wanted to buy one.

Bruno, with his education from Copenhagen Business School, was initially cautious about diving fully into the project. He knew what it took to start and run a business. However, after seeing Kamilla's persistence and growing success, he decided to join the company in 2017. Together, they made MamaMilla their livelihood. The website was launched in 2015—just two months before the couple’s second son was born. “Yes, it was a busy time,” they both laugh and exchange smiles.

Today, MamaMilla has four full-time employees, along with several freelance designers and web developers.

What matters most to MamaMilla?

According to Kamilla and Bruno, the key to their success is a combination of excellent customer service and high-quality products. These two elements are inseparable, they explain.

Customer service is one of their core values. A great example is their approach to handling complaints: “If we experience repeated complaints about a product, we remove it from the collection. We only send out high-quality products that won’t break,” Kamilla Vinding, MamaMilla.

As parents of three children, they understand how frustrating it can be to receive a faulty product: "If you’re already feeling stressed and receive a product that breaks shortly after purchase, you quickly lose trust in the webshop or the product," Kamilla Vinding, MamaMilla.

“The products have to be something we would use ourselves. We use ourselves as the test case and ask, ‘Would this be something we’d bring home and use? Do we think the quality is up to standard compared to the price? If it all adds up, then it’s a product we’ll carry.’”

MamaMillas production

MamaMilla develops their own private label products and also sells items from other well-known brands. "We have our products manufactured in India and have visited the production sites to ensure that conditions are in order and that GOTS certifications are followed," Bruno Poulsen, MamaMilla.

This allows MamaMilla to offer a wide range of products to their customers—both their own creations and popular brands that people are already familiar with.

Dreams for the Future

“We really like that MamaMilla feels as family-oriented as it does now—it’s like our second family. Our dream isn’t to grow much bigger than we are now. The dream has always been to make a living from it and earn a regular salary, while still enjoying going to work. We find it exciting to watch it grow and come up with new ideas,” Kamilla Vinding, MamaMilla.

“Entrepreneurship is a lifestyle. It requires you to shape your entire life around it because you’re never completely off. But you get something in return—it’s yours, and you watch it grow. Seeing something succeed and ensuring that both employees and customers are happy is an amazing feeling. It’s a lifestyle.”
