MitID Replaces NemID on October 31, 2022 – Everything You Need to Know About the Transition
NemID's replacement by MitID has been a familiar topic for a while now. Even though there has been plenty of discussion, it can still be tricky to figure out when to make the switch, especially when it comes to approving online transactions. Many people have already used MitID for banking and public services and assume they no longer need NemID. But as of now, NemID is still required to authorize online card payments, as MitID doesn't cover this yet.
MitID and E-commerce
During the transition, there will be some limitations with MitID when approving card payments online.
Starting from week 39 this year, banks will begin rolling out MitID for card payments, and from then on, you'll be able to use MitID to approve payments on webshops.
To ensure everyone can shop online, you will have the following 3 options for approving card payments online until the beginning of 2023:
- The MitID app
- A combination of an SMS code and a personal password, available if your phone can receive SMS. You need to sign up on the Nets website to use this option. (Sign up here)
- Mobile payment solutions, such as MobilePay, if the webshop accepts this method.
MitID’s code viewer and code reader can’t be used until the beginning of 2023.
NemID Transition: When It Ends and How to Prepare
- You can use your NemID key app and key viewer until October 31, 2022. After that, banks will completely discontinue the use of NemID for online and mobile banking, as well as card payments for online shopping.
However, it's important to know that if you're asked to update your information in the NemID app to transition to MitID, and your phone cannot handle the validation, you can still use the NemID app. In such cases, you will receive a letter from the Danish Agency for Digital Government with further instructions on what to do. NemID will continue to function in these cases until everyone has transitioned to the new system.
